(English/Spanish/Japanese/Portuguese text). In 1945 Bela Bartók described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for "didactic" purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the "world of the little ones, the children". Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartok's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up Mikrokosmos are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. | | | |

great piano method Oct 30, 2010
By Lily Bart I have started using these pieces with older beginners with a very good result. Trains reading, hand coordination and ear all at once.
Mikrokosmos Sep 07, 2011
By Paul Chierichetti Back in the '60's when I was in community college in Los Angeles everyone who was taking beginning piano had this volume (althought in a Schirmers edition) of the Mikrokosmos. Having already studied paino for 10 years I thought the pieces were impossibly simple and spare and did nothing with them. Recently I began praticing my clavichord to improve my piano touch- which is amazingly effective- and a friend that has concertized on the clavichord said that he often returned to the Mikrokosmos for technical support. I ordered this eiditon of Vol 1 from Amazon and started with the first piece. It's true, trying to play these simple pieces, written by Bartok to teach his son, is very rewarding and challenging. I then go to the Bach I'm working on and it goes smoother....
