I'm a music major at school and always wanted to master the technique of reading music.I searched and came across this book.This method book is amazing because it has levels 1 to 3 and its a great way to learn how to read music.I recommend this product if you are a serious musician like me.

I played sax as a kid so I know how to read music, and I wanted a beginner's book that took a note by note approach to guitar playing. (Being able to read music isn't necessary for this book, since it explains that stuff, but I suspect if you can read music you are likely to enjoy Hal's approach) Prior to finding this book, I was amazed how hard it is to find a beginner guitar book that isn't for non music readers or focused solely on chords. Those books shoved the notes info in skimpy, hard to understand, 1-2 page appendixes that only showed notes mapped to frets/strings. I learned about this book through my sister who is taking guitar lessons from a pro, and he said this is the best book to start with. I agree now that I am using it and after struggling with 5-6 other beginner books. Within a few pages I was playing songs, note by note, that weren't boring or overwhelming.
Also, this book is spiral bound so it lies flat on a music stand or stands up on its own - surprising how many guitar books are regular bound and won't stay open without great trouble, even with metal prongs on a stand holding them open.

I am a guitar instructor working at a Veterans Hospital teaching guitar to our returning warriors. I use this book to teach beginning, intermediate and advance levels of group guitar. It is a very well put together method and I enjoy watching my students grow in their playing and confidence as the progress through each lesson.

Best guitar book for beginner - period! Jul 27, 2012

I decided to pick up a guitar for the first time at age of 40, 5 months ago. This book has been a great tool in learning to play the instrument and in refreshing my skills at reading music.
While many other guitar books teach you to play tabs, this one starts you out right (imho) by teaching you how to read and play all the notes that are available in open position. It moves progressively, one string at a time, and provides exercises and songs that build on the previous lesson. Many of the songs are familiar, which makes it easy to tell if you're playing correctly.
In addition to teaching you how to play the range of notes the instrument is capable of, the book does a very good job of subtly introducing various musical concepts that are crucial for learning to play more complicated pieces later. Things like different keys, various timing etc. Since all of the lessons have an accompanying CD track, it's easy to check yourself to see if you're correctly interpreting the concept that's on paper.
The book also tries to introduce some of the more common playing styles, like Carter and Travis fingerstyle, power chord rock, etc. so that one can get a sense of what they are all about. There isn't enough material on these to really become proficient, but there is enough for someone to try out and decide if it's something they want to pursue more.
One final note (ha ha). The major reason I enjoy this book over many others is that it does not start you out on just learning various chords. That method, which is how several other beginner books are structured, frustrated the heck out of me. Chords are well covered throughout the book, but the approach is to teach them along the way. I personally like this approach because it allowed me to play something recognizable before I could easily do chord changes.
I highly recommend this book for someone who has just picked up a guitar for the first time and wants to make recognizable music quickly.
