Superb, Traditional Congas Oct 24, 2008
By New England Yankee I have the Tumba, Conga, and Quinto. I do not have the Requinto and haven't played it, so can't comment on that. This listing is for the Quinto.
Visually, these are stunning. They are made of very hard ash with a pronounced grain that just pops. Top that off with the gold Comfort Curve II rims, handles, and bottom bands, plus heart side plates, and the package is really pretty elegant.
The Giovanni's have natural heads. That, plus the wood body, makes for a warm tone. If you are accustomed to fiberglass congas or any of the available non-rawhide heads on the market, these may sound subdued to you and you may have to adjust your playing style a bit when you need a sharper slap or deeper bass. Don't mistake that for a criticism, though - that warm tone is just beautiful!
Playing seated, if you have have good position control and your foot lift technique is good, you'll be able to take advantage of the full dynamics in this set. If you play on stands, naturally the situation is somewhat easier. I will say the Tumba's bass note sounds best when the drum is up high.
Other notes: I find the Giovanni's fussy to tune. Mine work best together in a fairly narrow tuning range. These congas are quite heavy! That works for you in some ways - steadiness and tone, against you in others - transport and balance. The worth of the Comfort Curve II rim design depends on your technique, naturally, but are the type of design that can only help, not hurt you. If you can play traditional rims, these won't do anything additional for you. If you have trouble with traditional rims, you'll find these more comfortable by far. Watch out with the integrated shell protectors - they're nice to have and have saved me some dings, but they can be broken off themselves.
These are great, traditional tone congas that can compete with the best of the handmade congas available. What more would you need than Giovanni's endorsement anyway!!! Have a look also at the Giovanni Palladium congas. LP860Z Giovanni Palladium Series 11" Quinto
