4Martin Dulcimer Strings M640 Nickle Alloy  Jan 14, 2012 By Lisa L. Dahlgren
I went with the Martin & Co. to purchase the strings for my dulcimer because I have had nothing but great experiences with my guitar strings from them. While I will admit I have little to no experience with the dulcimer, I have been doing all I can to read up and learn through trial and error.

Stringing my dulcimer was a bit of a challenge, not because of the strings, but I had failed to look where the strings went prior to removing the old ones and I went on to stringing it. I had to make a few corrections and the strings were very forgiving, being as I had to restring two of the strings!

There is also the challenge of deciding if you are going to keep the full length of the strings or cut them down closer to the size of your instrument. One of the strings I kept at full length and that made for a mess when stinging it and then later tuning the one string. The other three, I had cut them closer to the proper length and this made it easier to string and later tune the dulcimer. This is in no way a problem or complaint toward the product!

I let the strings on the dulcimer sit a day or so, slightly tightened but not tuned and this helped with the tuning process later. I do the same thing with my guitar. For some reason, it seems to tune easier and stays in tune longer.

Considering I had no real experience with the dulcimer, only a guitar, I say the strings are comfortable and not hard to work with at all. Remember, you may have to cut the strings to the right size for easier stringing and later use. I am looking forward to many more hours of learning and experiencing what I can do with this instrument and I have already ordered more strings for the future, when needed!

1String loops don't fit over pegs on my mountain dulcimer  Sep 22, 2009 By J. Hargrove
I purchased the Martin & Co. M640 Standard .012-.022 nickel alloy dulcimer strings from Amazon in September 2009. The package arrived promptly in a nicely printed box with the strings segregated by the two gauges in interior sleeves. Unfortunately, the loops at the end of each string were not nearly large enough to fit over the instrument's hitching posts (which were, I believe, not particularly large).

Using pliers, I unwound the end of two strings a bit to make the loops large enough to slip over the posts, but no sooner was that done than both strings snapped and broke at the top of the loops. Martin & Co. seems to make reasonably good strings at thrifty prices, but the dulcimer string loops are too small for standard posts. Perhaps they are really for banjos.
